What were Japan’s biggest trends in 2014?

Following last year’s top trends and major buzzwords and memes, we are going to take a look back at the big trends and topics for 2014 in Japan. We already examined some of the main Twitter buzz of the year, but what about the overall trends?

Natural Disasters

Sadly there is rarely a year in Japan without natural disasters. Mudslides in Hiroshima in August killed over 70.

Even more dramatically, Mt Ontake suddenly erupted, killing over 50 hikers. Nikon provided one of the most heartwarming stories of the year, however, when they restored a digital camera of one of the deceased and returned the data to his family.

Tax

While Abenomics continued to falter, the nation was hit by a comprehensive price hike when the sales tax, for years a very modest 5%, was bumped up to 8% in the spring. One day everything changed, since shops and restaurants started advertising prices without tax included in an effort to persuade consumers that their items were still cheap, only to frustrate and confuse at the register when the actual price is revealed.

While sales tax in Japan remains far lower than most industrial nations, it was a big shock for a population whose wages had no increased in real terms for decades. It ended up becoming the Kanji of the Year.

Self-Immolation and Politics

As the Shinzo Abe government continued to push forward with controversial changes to the Constitution after the introduction of a worrying state secrets law last year, there were two shocking acts of protest. One man attempted to kill himself by self-immolation in the heart of Shinjuku one Sunday, while another succeeded one evening in November in Hibiya Park.

The government’s newly introduced “right to collective self-defense” then became one of the “words of the year”, though for all the wrong reasons. Members of the Abe government were also accused of having ties to ultra-nationalists and race hate groups.

Abe apparently made a gesture of reconciliation with China when he met with Xi Jinping at the APEC Summit in November, though the lack of enthusiasm on both parties’ faces showed how they really felt about each other. Was this the world’s most awkward head-of-states handshake ever?

Wails and Whales

In late March, the International Court of Justice ruled that Japan’s “scientific whaling research” was illegal, though it has not yet halted the nation’s disputed annual hunt.

Meanwhile, Hyogo politician Ryutaro Nonomura became a global sensation for his incredible, tearful apology at a press conference as he attempts to explain his suspicious expenses to the public.

Ghostwriters and Liars

The year also saw a “modern-day Beethoven” exposed as a fraud who had a ghostwriter composing his music for years. Oh, and he wasn’t even really deaf.

Even more seriously, the female scientist at Riken who claimed to have discovered STAP cells was found to have doctored part of her paper. It was later withdrawn and Haruko Obokata was made a scapegoat, vilified by the media who had so hyped her up in the first place. Riken also backpedalled over its support for its young “star” and her supervisor eventually committed suicide.

Tennis

Japan’s biggest sporting success is an easy one: Kei Nishikori went on to become World No. 5 and secured a place in the finals of the US Open, the first male Asian ever to reach the last match of a Grand Slam tournament. “There’s no one left I can’t beat,” declared the confident Nishikori at one point (though he was ultimately beaten by Croatian player Marin Cilic).

Kabe-don

A fun one to end with. The word seemed to come out of nowhere and now it is being used for marketing events by GU and Morinaga. Originally a phrase for describing how you might “pound the wall” when your neighbor is being loud, now it seems to mean when a guy traps a girl against a wall and leans in for a smooch.

Take a Oculus Rift virtual test drive into space in Mitsubishi Outlander Phev

Mitsubishi recently offered an interstellar virtual test drive for its Outlander Phev model using the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset.

Like the Nissan Leaf, the Outlander Phev is as much a giant battery as a vehicle. The EV can be charged up and store the electricity needed to power a household for a day. This makes it ideal for this kind of marketing gimmick, since you can plug in your computer and Oculus Rift directly into the car.

With the aid of the system, one lucky guy recently drove an Outlander Phev to the stars in a Mitsubishi showroom. He had two computers running in the trunk of the Outlander Phew and was connected to the nine speakers in the car.

The “virtual space drive” graphics for the Oculus test drive were developed by Mitsubishi as part of its Starry Sky Project to encourage interest in astronomy and stargazing in Japan.

Though these images show a preview, the Oculus Outlander Phev car was also available at a booth at the Eco Products 2014 expo last weekend, following earlier tests at other events in October and November.

This isn’t the first VR stunt of its kind. Nissan previously used the Oculus Rift for a similar virtual reality driving experience at the Tokyo Motor Show in 2013.

“Dreamer Nippon Inemuri” music video pays tribute to sleepy commuters

We’ve all seen them. We’ve all pitied them. We’ve all admired them.

Japanese trains are full of odd sights — but perhaps none so odd as the spectacle of people managing to get some shuteye no matter how crowded or what position they are in, whether standing, sitting, kneeing or (unfortunately for those around them) leaning. No matter how fast the train is going, no matter who is watching — the Japanese are able to sleep anywhere.

Even more impressively, they are more often than not able to wake up in time for their stop. It must be some sort of innate ability taught when salarymen join major corporations.

japan sleep doze train passenger commuter nippon inemuri dreamer tokyo

A new music video called “Dreamer Nippon Inemuri” is proving popular because it pays tribute to these sleepy commuters, featuring a series of shots of people sleeping while riding a train. (“Nippon Inemuri” literally means “Japan dozing”.)

japan sleep doze train passenger commuter nippon inemuri dreamer tokyo

The roughly 50 sleepers were filmed by digital marketing planner Kairi Manabe over two days on public transport. We’re not sure if this counts as infringing on their rights but the results are interesting to watch — not least to admire the tenacity of these train passengers determined to get some sleep no matter what.

The music for the video is by Yusuke Emoto.

The video is actually a Web commercial for Home’s, a real estate portal site which offers a function where you can filter searches based on the commuting time. In other words, it’s encouraging you to move somewhere that’s closer to work! “A long, long way to bed” as the video poignantly says at the end…

Monster Face Pack series turns Hollywood horror ghouls into skin care tools

You got the original Kabuki Face Pack. Then you got the Animal Face Pack, the Cats Face Pack, and the Fashion Face Pack. You probably also went and got the Hello Kitty Face Pack.

Well, now how about the Monster Face Pack?

Makers Isshin Do Honpo’s next remarkable skin care tool is a series of four face packs inspired by classic Hollywood horror ghouls. They not only make you look like something straight out of an old movie, they are appropriately made with rosemary, a plant that has traditionally been used in Europe to ward off evil spirits.

First up is the Vampire Face Pack.

The red and white colors are as vibrant as you’d expect from the creators of the Kabuki Face Pack. The details are great, from the bat wings around the eyes to the fangs and the drip of blood on the mouth. Isshin promises that wearing it won’t make you develop an appetite for other people’s blood!

Here’s the Wolfman Face Pack, which transforms you into a werewolf. Feel free to wear the face pack at full moons or any other time of the month for that matter. Don’t worry, it’s not hairy.

The Skeleton Monster Face Pack is, of course, black and white. We love the teeth! Since the one thing skeletons are seriously lacking is skin, we do wonder about the irony of a face pack with this particular undead creature!

monster face pack frankenstein

Lastly, Frankenstein’s Monster Face Pack is inspired by the classic Boris Karloff look of the creature Baron Frankenstein makes, from the green skin to the “stitches”. You don’t have to do a silly walk while wearing the face pack but it might help!

While these are obviously novelty ideas which put the fun back into skin care, they are still nonetheless genuine beauty treatment tools that contain nutrients and ingredients designed to improve the quality and vigor of your face. Such face packs are popular in Japan with women as daily items worn before bed.

Isshin Do Honpo have also issued a new Kabuki Face Pack, the Kabuki Face Pack Kotobuki with two new colorful designs based on Kabuki make-up.

TV Tokyo election screen captions reveal unusual sides to politicians

If we’re honest, Japanese television is not acclaimed for its sophistication or journalistic integrity.

And the coverage of the recent Lower House election last weekend did little to boost that reputation, especially the screen captions employed by TV Tokyo.

The channel is known for doing things a bit differently to other broadcasters but it might have taken this policy for being alternative to a new level this time.

Its captions gave extra “tidbits” about the politicos that were frankly sometimes funny, often surreal — and always politically irrelevant. Perhaps the channel knew how silly the election was and just wanted to make light of the situation?

Here are some of our favorites, which delighted Japanese netizens.

Japanese lesbian celebrity couple “marry” in Tokyo, want to adopt

japanese celebrity lesbian couple ayaka ichinose akane sugimori

Former Gravure model and television personality Ayaka Ichinose (34) and actress Akane Sugimori (28) have announced that they are a couple and will marry in Tokyo next April.

This follows the news earlier this month that Hotel Granvia in Kyoto is offering a “gay weddings” service, in cooperation with a local Buddhist temple, joining Tokyo Disneyland in accommodating gay couples who want to marry in Japan.

japanese celebrity lesbian couple ayaka ichinose akane sugimori

Japan, needless to say, does not legally allow gay marriage, and so these “marriages” are all purely ceremonial. Article 24 of the Constitution of Japan is interpreted to mean only men and women may marry.

Marriage shall be based only on the mutual consent of both sexes and it shall be maintained through mutual cooperation with the equal rights of husband and wife as a basis.

While there are some famous openly celebrities in Japan — perhaps most notably Akihiro Miwa — Ichinose and Sugimori might be the only open LGBT couple in the entertainment industry. Ichinose came out in 2009 and met Sugimori at a gay bar in Shinjuku in late 2012. They also now say they hope to adopt a child, though again their chances here are surely slim.

Japan has a rich gay history but LGBT rights get short shrift in the mainstream media, despite some estimates that around 5% of the population may be a sexual minority.

In the recent Lower House election former Toshima ward assemblyman Taiga Ishikawa failed to become Japan’s first elected openly gay member of parliament.

In June a lesbian couple generated headlines when they submitted a wedding application to Aomori City, which was rejected on constitutional grounds. The 23rd Tokyo International Lesbian & Gay Film Festival in July included a reading of the play “8″ by Dustin Lance Black, which portrays the federal trial that led to the overturning of Proposition 8 in California. Could a similar court case in Japan be a possibility in the future?

KDDI au and Hakuhodo create Sync Dinner, a “virtual Christmas Eve restaurant experience” for couples separated by distance

sync dinner au kddi hakuhodo christmas eve restaurant tokyo osaka virtual experience restaurant meal couples

In Japan, Christmas Eve is not a time for church — it’s a time for couples. Restaurants in cities are packed with pairs of diners enjoying expensive, luxury courses.

But not everyone has a special someone on this romantic day, while others are separated from their partner due to work or other commitments. Fortunately, au has stepped in with Hakuhodo to create a one-day-only restaurant for those couples who cannot meet face-to-face on December 24th.

Syn Dinner is a virtual way to connect “two distant hearts.”

sync dinner au kddi hakuhodo christmas eve restaurant tokyo osaka virtual experience restaurant meal couples

Two couples have been selected who live 400km apart.

The couples reside apart in Tokyo and Osaka, but thanks to au’s realtime screen displays set up in hotel rooms in the respective cities they will be able to enjoy a virtual Christmas Eve meal.

sync dinner au kddi hakuhodo christmas eve restaurant tokyo osaka virtual experience restaurant meal couples

While the technology still has limitations and there will certainly be no post-dinner “dessert” — surely part of the draw for many couples! — participants will at least be able to eat and talk as if they are in the same restaurant.

As au say, “for long-distance lovers, this interactive dinner enables ‘heart-to-heart connection’ by sharing the same time and space together”.

sync dinner au kddi hakuhodo christmas eve restaurant tokyo osaka virtual experience restaurant meal couples

sync dinner au kddi hakuhodo christmas eve restaurant tokyo osaka virtual experience restaurant meal couples

Motion sensors sync your toast. The same waiter will seem to be traveling the 400km to serve both parties the dinner (we suspect twins are employed). You can blow through the display to blow out the Christmas cake candles served during the meal, and also add digital “decoration” to your face or hands via the display. And finally you can even have a romantic photo taken of the two of you “together” at the restaurant.

Unfortunately, au is no longer taking applications. The two couples already chosen will be sitting down to their long-distance meal in two separate sessions from 5pm on December 24th. Still, it would be neat if this kind of system became a permanent feature of certain restaurants and hotels in the near future.

Want to give a special something to that special someone? But it’s not just what you give. It’s how you give.

And in Japan, the wrapping and packaging of a gift item is traditionally viewed almost as important as the content of the gift itself.

And so we get great services like this I WRAP Heart, now available at Plaza Ginza until December 25th. It allows you to gift wrap an item with your own portrait. In other words, that box or otherwise dull package will be transformed with a picture of you on the wrapping paper.

Karaoke is an ever-evolving social activity. In recent years we’ve seen karaoke-for-one services springing up, karaoke rooms transform into a fashion pop-up shop, and even a karaoke-convenience store business model. Cosplay is also regularly available at karaoke rooms, as well as musical instruments.

Now Humming Girls Room with JOYSOUND will be opening at JOYSOUND Shinagawa for two days only, January 17th-18th.

So-called women-only Joshi-kai (“girls’ meet-ups”) have become popular at restaurants and other places, invariably involving an activity combined with a group meal. This time it’s photography and luxury cosplay, since in the karaoke room you can dress us in a wedding dress and pretend you are getting married.

JOYSOUND is offering the service for groups of 3-8 participants. No proof of actual marriage is required, though it could also serve as a really cheap wedding party.

Japan’s extraordinary pet clothes trends: Mobile kotatsu for cats, hot dog backpack for dogs

Japan’s love affair with the pet rarely fails to impress.

And now just in time for New Year and the winter, we have the Katatsu Mobile Kotatsu Cat Table. While not an actual kotatsu (a table with a heater and blanket) — or as impressive as the Neo-Kotatsu fashion we saw earlier in the year — this pet clothing set by brand Unihabitat is designed to help you recreate those cute pictures of cats snuggling under the kotatsu.

If you can persuade your feline friend to wear this Velcro-strap contraption, complete with “orange” and “tea” on the top, then you are guaranteed a thousand photo opportunities.

katatsu catatsu neko kotatsu cat portable table clothes

Not to be left out, Unihabitat also make something for the pooches too. Although hot dogs are not especially common snacks in Japan, that didn’t stop these pet clothes designers from coming up with a sausage-and-bun-themed “backpack” for dogs.

Yes, the naming should be obvious here — it’s the Hot Dog Pet Clothes.

A special box for storing your cat’s whiskers? Of course. (And there’s even one for storing their old teeth too!)

Still, perhaps nothing beats the Pet Emergency Evacuation Jacket, designed to protect your animal chum even if Mother Nature turns nasty (actually there are many of these types of bags and items for helping your pet in an earthquake or disaster).

And for less “wacky” products, there are clever tools for cleaning up pet hair and even stylish “architecture for dogs”. Saying that, the duckbill-shaped Oppo Dog Muzzle Quack, while brilliantly original in design, probably did not do much for the reputation of Japan’s pet industry overseas.

There is Christmas, and then there is Christmas in Japan.

Christmas in Japan is actually really all about Christmas Eve. And forget churches and family time. It’s more of a date night than anything, and the “traditional food” is KFC chicken and strawberry shortcake. And if you’re not confused enough already, a trip to Shibuya, as Kai-You showed us, will throw you into a cosplay bonanza that has very little to do with anything that happened in Bethlehem two thousand years ago.

And as we saw with the Halloween celebrations in Shibuya, young Japanese Tokyoites will jump at any chance to dress up in costumes and have fun.

Here was Gravure model Misaki Shimoda leading the festivities.

Shiseido has rolled out a new ad campaign featuring 50 selfies by Lady Gaga. Each selfie will be published in a different newspaper over two days this month: 46 were featured in national and regional newspapers on January 1st, and a further four will appear in four final newspapers on January 5th.

While it’s common to use western stars for ad campaigns (a current, slightly notorious Toyota TV ad campaign has Hugh Jackman), a “personal” campaign like this stands out. Gaga has taken the selfies exclusively for Shiseido to show off their make-up in use in the icon’s life.

lady gaga shiseido selfie campaign ad newspapers japan

Shiseido is famed for its cosmetics that keep Japanese women’s skin looking young and beautiful, though it almost always uses Japanese models (of all ages). So a series of selfie with a western music superstar is striking, not least because it makes a stark contrast to the Photoshopped images of Japanese actresses Shiseido usually employs, with their perfect skin and smiles.

Here the emphasis is on “Shiseido with you”, the makeup brand supporting women who want to create their own style — something Gaga has certainly done. Shiseido has also created a new “Vision 2020″ strategy looking ahead to the Tokyo Olympics, which will see the brand diversify and personalize.

Gaga herself tweeted: “I’m so excited to start a makeup revolution in Japan! The 50 Selfies celebrate Haus of Gaga creations & the future of the face w/ @Shiseido!”

For Gaga fans, the Japan-only selfies will all also be available online by January 13th on Shiseido’s marketing website. If you can’t wait that long, fans have been taking photos of the newspaper ads and uploading them.

After GU in Ginza “seduced” female (and male) customers by having two hunky models plant their hands on the wall to trap them in a position perfect for a smooch, now Odakyu Department Store is offering kabe-don “dream bags”.

This is a variation on the usual “lucky bags” (fukubukuro) traditionally sold by department stores and other shops during the New Year sales. You don’t know what you get, but the chances are what’s included inside the mystery bag is worth much more than the fixed price.

A big shift in the lucky bag retail concept has been that customers today can sell on the contents using internet auctions. It means there is now no real demerit to the system. If you don’t like one of the things in the bag, you can just sell it as new to another person online.

And this gets more interesting if the lucky bag includes limited edition or other special items, meaning you can sell them on at inflated prices.

Some department stores instead opt now to offer real-life “experiences” for shoppers who brave the New Year crowds, such as a hug from Funassyi (yes, that’s a real — and expensive — example).

Odakyu is offering “dream bags” for ladies seeking the kabe-don wall thud experience. All right, the department store is not actually offering instant kabe-don sessions for women right there in the store (perhaps that’s coming next year). Instead, the bags are actually meant for men (or women who want to dress their man in the image they desire). Priced ¥10,000 (around $100), the bags each contain a handkerchief, tiepin, cuff buttons, mouthwash, and perfume — the ideal set of items for a man who wants to give his lady friend a kabe-don seduction in a real gentlemen’s guise.

If you fancy trying this out, you’d better hurry because there are only five of the kabe-don “costume” bags available.

Tokyo Cheapo’s Guide to Tokyo Love Hotels

tokyo love hotels

This article by Selena Hoy first appeared on Tokyo Cheapo.

Ready for some lovin’? Perhaps you live in a guesthouse, a tiny apartment with paper thin walls, or with too many roommates/relatives/children/grandparents all up in your business, and not in a good way. You could go to a regular hotel, but respectability is boring. Plus, who doesn’t love mirrored ceilings, jacuzzi tubs, and complimentary flavored rubbers? Erhm…

tokyo love hotels

Enter the Tokyo love hotel, or rabuho (rub hotels?). Though this idea might seem sleazy to people used to the idea of no-tell motels back home, love hotels are super clean and used not only by trysting lovers, but middle-aged couples looking to get away from the live-in in-laws (and vice versa). Also called fashion hotels, couple hotels, and leisure hotels, these kitsch havens offer fun themed sleeping (or not sleeping) experiences for prices comparable to business hotels. Additionally, there are a few workarounds that can save you some extra yennies.

Who

While most Tokyo love hotels tend to be anonymous, often with no human interaction (other than with your special friend) during the transaction, there have been reports of some people being turned away for being not the “right” clientele. These stories of refusal include same-sex pairs, groups larger than two, and non-Japanese looking (or speaking) people. However, we have never been turned away, and have visited quite a few establishments.

What

Love hotels can be identified by their creative names and kitschy façades. Witness: Hotel Casa Nova, XO Shinjuku, Casablanca Ikebukuro, Hotel Zebra, Ramses Club, Hotel Adore, Hotel Ring My Bell, need we go on? Often adorned with neon colors, and gaudy decór, most love hotels have some degree of boudoir fancy that makes them easily identifiable. Indoors, you’ll find rooms decked out with themed decorations (or bland themeless rooms if it’s really budget), fancy bathrooms with showers for two, jet baths, etc., and a TV stocked with all kinds of, ahem, special channels. Unlike biz hotels, you don’t have to pay extra for the juicier programs.

There will also sometimes be room service, vending machines with various toys, karaoke machines, disco lights, costume rental for some spicy cosplay, and more. We’ve stayed in rooms decked out with: flowers, figurines, and tinkly lullaby music playing overhead (creepy), a Chinese opium den themed room, a pole smack in the middle of the room, velvet paintings, the list goes on. The bathrooms tend to also be even more well stocked with toiletries than your average hotel: shampoo, conditioner, lotions, creams, hair products, and of course, contraception. Two seems to be the standard for free condoms, so if you’re planning a marathon, you may want to come prepared.

When

Rabuho famously have “rest” (休憩) times (lasting about 2-3 hours) and “stay” (宿泊) times (overnight). Rest rates start around 3000 yen, while stay rates are about two to three times that of stay. Check in times for a stay start pretty late – think 10 p.m. or even later, checking out around 10 or 11 a.m. One bargain to look for: “service” or “free” time (サービスタイム or フリータイム) is the best deal, typically because the hours are off peak/inconvenient. For example, taking a room from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. might be half the cost of the stay rate. Of course, rates vary by location, and you might not want to sleep the daylight hours away, but for night owls, dancing fools, all-night-karaokers, and people willing to mess up their circadian rhythms for a deal, service time just might be your jam.

tokyo love hotels

Where

These hotels can be found all over the city and country, but the biggest areas in Tokyo for concentrations of hotels are Uguisudani near Ueno (82 in the greater ward), the Dogenzaka “Love Hotel Hill” area of Shibuya (71), Shinjuku’s Kabukicho (94), and Ikebukuro’s East, North, and West Exits (108) according to Happy Hotel. The site (in Japanese) has a fairly comprehensive listing of hotels, with addresses, ratings, pictures, and even some coupons for things like free drinks or a thousand yen off the room price. But for the more spontaneous, a good bet is to just stroll around one of the districts, look for one whose aspect and prices fit your fancy, and saunter in.

tokyo love hotels

How

Love hotels can be identified not only by their fetching fronts, but by the signs advertising rest and stay prices. Once inside, you’re likely to encounter a big board with pictures of various rooms and their prices. Rooms that are lit up are available; if they’re dark, they are occupied. Choose a room, and either press the button on the board itself, or on a nearby machine. Occasionally, you will have to deal with a human to whom you’ll tell your choice, but the clerk will usually be behind a small window in a wall, with only hands visible. Eye contact is almost never made. Unless it’s an old lady at the desk — then brace yourself for awkward greetings and no less awkward thanks on the way out. But either way, your secrets are safe here.

Sometimes you’ll get a key, but often you’ll be directed to just go to the room, where the door will be unlocked. Once in, the door locks automatically. Some hotels do not allow re-entry, so when you leave, be ready to pay. Payment is usually at a machine: sometimes in the room, sometimes by pneumatic tube (yes, really), and occasionally through the tiny window with the floating human hands. Typically, payment is made on exiting, and they’ll charge you if you’ve overstayed. Sometimes though, you do pay up front.

Finally, some hotels offer membership cards. Just like at the supermarket or the coffeeshop, you can earn points, discounts and free stays with your loyalty to a certain chain. Prices for these cards vary; some of them are free, while others take a small membership fee. Kind of a modern notch-on-the-belt (or bedpost) system. This will either give you great delight, or make you realize that you might save money moving into an apartment with thicker walls and fewer roommates.

Will the Tokyo 2020 Olympics be the “eco Olympics”?

tokyo olympic games 2020

When Tokyo made its ultimately successful bid for the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games, it emphasized how its Games would be compact and ecological.

The Olympic Village to house athletes for 2020 Games in Tokyo will be a futuristic “hydrogen town”. Power and hot water will be generated from hydrogen gas supplied by stations and pipelines built by the city in other locations. These would feed into a network of clean hydrogen energy fuel cells.

But the “eco Games” have already been controversial, not least for the decision to award the biggest feather in the contractors’ caps — the new Olympic Stadium — to a foreign architect, Zaha Hadid, and for a design that looks like a spaceship. So much for the green Olympics. Outrage over the cost and size of the stadium, far in excess of the original allocation, has led to it being scaled back dramatically. That said, the new stadium is still going to cost $1.37 billion, possibly the most expensive stadium in the world. “We aim to build Japan’s National Stadium to boast to the world,” said the Japan Sport Council. Leading Japanese architects have instead responded that Hadid’s stadium is a white elephant, a “turtle”.

The existing national stadium is going to be demolished this month. The new venue was proposed because the current one does not meet Olympic standards nor is it up to today’s levels of anti-seismic safety.

Clean energy automobiles is one area that no one would dispute Japan has been a pioneer. Toyota has become the top car manufacturer thanks to its hybrid electric vehicles, while the Nissan Leaf is the world’s best-selling all-electric vehicle. This trend looks set to continue as we approach the Games. Toyota have just released the Mirai, a sedan that is world’s first mass-market fuel-cell car in Japan. Even the buses to transport athletes in 2020 will be hydrogen-powered.

tokyo 2020 olympic games athletes village eco hydrogen power cells sustainable

Sustainable energy is the elephant in the room in Japan. The immense furore over nuclear energy in the wake of the Fukushima crisis has turned the argument predominantly into one of the risks of nuclear power versus the need for the so-called “nuclear village” system, which was erected by the government in the post-war period. However, the real issue is not only if nuclear power stations, especially old ones built decades ago, are sensible in a nation with so many natural disasters. The task at hand is not so just clean energy for the 17,000 athletes living for a few weeks at Harumi, but green energy for the whole of Japan.

The Olympic Village section of the 2020 Games proposal specifically highlights the eco nature of the plan.

Construction of the Olympic Village will produce minimal greenhouse gas emissions through a comprehensive and verifiable greenhouse gas reduction plan. It will be developed in compliance with the Tokyo 2020 Sustainability Strategy, and the “Green Building Program” and the “Tokyo Vision 2020” long-term urban plan. The CASBEE Urban Development standard will be applied, and specific elements of the LEED ND (Neighbourhood Development) standard applied where practicable.

Since the Olympic Village site is a stepping stone in the “Wind Trail” described in “Tokyo Vision 2020″, it has been designed so comfort zone winds will easily pass through. Landscaping, green roofs and walls are actively planned. These efforts are also incorporated in guidelines of the TMG’s development programmes. Implementation of environmental measures will be an incentive for development in the private sector.

It goes further to discuss the legacy of the Games in terms of sustainability.

The Olympic Village will become an urban residential “smart city pioneer model”, where Japanese sustainability technologies are assembled.

In other words, the Village will become a model for further smart city development rolled out over the rest of Tokyo and Japan.

If the Tokyo government is sincere about this, they have a lot of work to do.

The 74-year-old artist Tatsuo Horiuchi continues to prove that age and technology can mix very well, as can tradition and computer software.

Horiuchi might well be almost halfway through his eighth decade on this planet but he continues to wow people with his artworks created entirely using Microsoft Excel. Typically these are traditional Japanese landscapes, of the kinds you might find on a folding screen panel.

His beautiful Nengajo (New Year card) for 2015 put any postcards you might have purchased from a convenience store to shame.

Naturally he chose a lamb and sheep as the main motifs (2015 is the year of the sheep).
